AWS F1 is the first-generation FPGA-accelerated EC2 family, pairing Intel Xeon E5-2686 v4 (Broadwell) hosts with Xilinx Virtex UltraScale+ VU9P FPGAs. It targets workloads that benefit from custom hardware acceleration such as genomics, video processing, networking/security, and large-scale analytics. There is no announced retirement for F1 as of Jan 2026, but F2 is the newer AWS FPGA family for new builds.
